Hi, friends! Summer is upon us and in full force! We have been doing so many fun summertime things around here that I just can’t keep them to myself!
Piper lately has been full of energy (iced coffee has been a life saver for mama) and LOVES being outside. Now, it’s only a mild 472 degrees here in Florida this time of year, but we’re doing what we can to make the most of it. However, at this point it’s safe to say that if we’re going to be outdoors for an extended period of time then there better be body of water nearby.
Pip is nearing nineteen months old which has proven to be the BEST age yet. She is constantly cracking us up with her sharp wit and the way she discovers new things. She actually tends to be more of a timid little thing most of the time. She’s very careful and tentative in everything she does. This can be good and bad. Sometimes I get impatient with her hesitance and just want her to dive in head first and really experience new things, but on the other hand I’m grateful that she’s not wild and crazy and impulsive.
She is a happy and very loving little toddler and we really couldn’t be more obsessed with her.
We are so fortunate to have a REAL pool this summer. We moved into our new house in December and the pool doesn’t have a heater, so it was a long four months or so before we could really put it to use.
Nowadays the pool feels like bath water and we’ve been pretty much living in it. We love inviting friends over for a swim, so this 4th of July we did just that. Piper and her little buddies bathed themselves in sticky sweet bomb pops while my bestie and I stuck ours into some sparkling wine to unwind.
My favorite part of pool swim dates is how effing long it takes to wrestle a bunch of toddlers like crocodiles to slather them in sunscreen. Don’t forget the inflation of pool floats, water fill ups, avoiding hot concrete, and the occasional meltdown over floating bugs (mainly from the grown-ups). It’s a round trip ticket on the Hot Mess Express, but somehow ends up being a freakin’ blast regardless.
Pip Pip didn’t make it to fireworks this year, especially since the 4th fell on a school/work night. This girl just loves her routine too much to sabotage it for 30 minutes of fireworks and 80 minutes of traffic.
Pip was VERY skeptical of this splash pad. She pretty much refused to explore beyond sticking her toes in the water. We were just about to give up and head out when Daddy said “you know what… screw it” and ran fully clothed through the fountains with her. THIS was a blast, for everyone involved, really. Daddies to the rescue, am I right?
Our little fishy LOVES to paddle and kick her legs in the pool. We’ve thrown around the idea of swimming lessons for awhile, especially since we have a pool in our backyard. However, our free time is so incredibly limited that it just doesn’t seem feasible this summer. So, we’ve done our research and have been doing our best to teach Pip safe swimming techniques on our own. She is learning to hold her breath under water and she’s a champ at climbing the wall on the side of the pool. Hopefully we can get her into some real lessons next spring, but she’s doing pretty great for now!
When your bestie throws the coolest birthday party involving REAL MERMAIDS. Piper was having NONE of it, though.
As for after the hot summer sun goes down – Piper is becoming quite the movie lover… well… really just Moana lover… but, I couldn’t be more thrilled because I love a good movie night! We’ve built forts and popped popcorn and snuggled so hard.
I love this trick of lighting candles in the fireplace when it’s just too hot for a real fire. My careful little Piper stays far away, but loves to point at it and go “hot hot!”
Sometimes, in the evenings, the temperature chills out slightly and we can occasionally have dinner on the back porch. Piper loves this and just stares at the pool longingly the whole time.
Summertime definitely means way more baths with all the sunscreen, bug spray, popsicles, and barbecue sauce. This girl doesn’t mind, though. She’ll take any chance to splash around in some water.
I’m also pretty sure we only wear shoes if absolutely necessary.
This summer, we have been HUGE on homemade trail mix and popcorn recipes. Some of our favorites have been this super easy S’mores Trail Mix and this fun festive popcorn. I’m crazy for popcorn mixes because 1) sweet & salty snacks are my jam and 2) you can coordinate them with any holiday! For the 4th of July, I swirled blue and red food coloring into the melted white chocolate. For St. Patty’s Day we love throwing in some Lucky Charms. Colored sprinkles work really well for any holiday and you bet your butt I’ll be throwing some candy corn into the mix once Halloween gets closer!
Summer baby style has always been my favorite because BABY ROLLS. This may be Piper’s last summer with chunky thighs (excuse me while I die a little), so I love putting her in tiny little track shorts like these.
As for mama style, I have been digging ripped jeans lately. This is sort of wild because I haven’t liked jeans since my teenage years (yoga pants & leggings 4eva), but jeans just look so great paired with a flowy summer top and sort of make me look like I have my shit together (I don’t).
I’ve never been one to do major upkeep on my nails, but this perfect pinky-red nail polish by Essie has got me feeling some type of way this summer. Also, its name is “Hiking Heels” which just makes me giddy.
We have been fruit CRAZY in the Allen household during the recent heat wave. Piper eats berries like they’re candy and frozen grapes are everything when you’re sweating by the pool.
We also still have a pretty lengthy summer wish list. I’ve been eyeballing this awesome wagon for some time now. I can’t wait to stick Piper in it with some snacks and take a stroll around the neighborhood when it gets a bit cooler. And, let’s be honest, I’m totally already daydreaming about trick or treating in this thing. Also, these toddler rain boots have me SWOONING. Mama already has a pair of green Hunter boots (pictured in this post), but how freakin’ cute would we be with matching rain boots!? You can file this under “stuff my husband rolls his eyes at.”
Lastly, I have been blasting the new Imagine Dragons album non-stop. It’s amazing for car rides, hard-hitting workouts, yoga, cleaning… literally ALL the things. So good. We alternate between this album and the Moana soundtrack because
Mama Piper is obsessed.
I think that pretty much sums up our Summer 2017 so far! To be quite honest, summer has always been my least favorite season. But, I’m trying really hard lately to embrace every season that I have with my little Piper O.
We hope you have been living it up and taking full advantage of all things summer. Remember to slather on the sunscreen and drink at least 86 liters of water per day. 😉
